Voci Community Choir concert April 8, 10
Join the a capella Voci Choir for a “knee-slapping, warm-feeling” program as they present “We’re Bound Away: Folk Music of the Americas” on Friday, April 8 (7 p.m.) and Sunday, April 10 (2 p.m.) at Hood River’s Riverside Community Church. Voci Community Choir presents “I’m Bound Away–Folk Music of the Americas”
People of a certain age will remember the folk music revival. Performers like Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan or Joan Baez sang timeless music that had been performed for centuries in America and the British Isles.
The folk revival led to singer/songwriters like James Taylor, a genre that is still going strong. On April 8 and 10, CGOA’s Voci Community Choir presents just a small sampling of folk music from a wide range of traditions, from Canada, the United States and Mexico. All the music shares a simplicity and directness of expression and emotions that everyone can relate to. That’s the beauty of folk music. It comes from everyday experiences and feelings.

All welcome! 301 Gallery is located at 301 Oak Street, in the beautiful Butler Bank building in downtown Hood River.
Conductor Corin Parker has selected music that is fun and joyful for both the performers and audiences. The music ranges from the rollicking “I’se the B’y,” a sea chanty from Newfoundland to the reflective “That Lonesome Road,” by James Taylor. There’s music in Spanish, music by Stephen Foster and songs from the spiritual tradition as well. The concert includes the premiere of “Two Water Songs,” which weaves together “Shenandoah” and “The Water is Wide.”
In addition to the choir, Parker is featuring guest musicians to accompany the singers, including popular local performer Dennis Castanares (known professionally as Alonzo Garbanzo). Other CGO musicians joining in are Hugh Amick, Kate Dougherty, Ed Price and Kathy Smith. Several Voci members will have solo turns.
The Voci Community Choir was founded over fifteen years ago by CGOA Artistic Director Mark Steighner. The choir has given a number of world premieres, and performed in concert with the Gorge Sinfonietta, presenting masterpieces like the Mozart Requiem and the Beethoven 9th symphony.
All audience members must present proof of COVID-19 vaccinations or recent negative tests. Masks are optional and at the discretion of the audience.

Mosier’s own Mosier Company celebrates a new Working Hands beer release on Friday, April 8, at 5 p.m. with Americana and Country music from Alder Brook and Albert Nicholas. Working Hands Beer provides the new beer “Exit 69.”

CGOA raises funds for Ukraine Relief
According to reports, concert goers to last week’s Sinfonietta concert with Tom Grant heard a tribute to the Ukrainian with the playing of the Ukrainian national anthem. (No information if the Bandura was involved). A special donation fund for Unicef's Ukraine Children's Relief program raised over $1600 and additional donations can be made to https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?donation=cgoa for a limited time.
Book Club meets in Bingen April 20
The Wine and Book Club meets at the Society Hotel in Bingen, Wash., on Wednesday, April 20, at 5 p.m. Hosted by Ashlyn N., the featured book is “Atlas of the Heart,” by Brené Brown.
Radio Reminders
I was walking home the other day and a bumper sticker told me there was something called El Rio, 99.9 FM (KAHG), which turns out to be “Christian programming and music for the Hispanic community in the Columbia River Gorge.” This is in addition to Radio Tierra, 95.1, also bringing music and news programs for the Hispanic community. In the Worth Mentioning Department?: For a long time, there’s been a flyer posted downstairs in the Hood River County Library for something called deadrabbitradio.com. The most “information” seems to be at the Patreon page for this “daily paranormal, conspiracy and true crime podcast.” But, does the creator live here in The Gorge, or did a fan of the show post the flyer?
